Pratt & Whitney Canada's PW545B Engine Selected to Power
the New Cessna Citation XLS Business Jet
ORLANDO, FLORIDA--(NBAA 2003) Pratt & Whitney Canada's (P&WC)
PW545B engine has been selected by Cessna Aircraft Company to
power its new Cessna Citation XLS, an enhanced version of the
popular Cessna Citation Excel business jet.
The PW545B engine, a growth derivative of the PW545A engine that
has powered the Citation Excel since it first entered service in
July 1998, provides a best-in-class combination of cruise thrust,
fuel consumption and power-to-weight ratio.
"Cessna Aircraft, one of our longest-standing customers, is once
again demonstrating its confidence in Pratt & Whitney Canada with
this selection," said Alain M. Bellemare, President, P&WC. "We
are looking forward to continuing to work closely with Cessna to
ensure the continued success of their products in the aerospace
market."
The PW545B engine offers greater take-off and high altitude
performances than its predecessor while maintaining the same
Specific Fuel Consumption (SPC) levels and involving only minor
changes.
P&WC's new PW545B engine provides 3,991 pounds of thrust at 83
degrees F, an increase of 4.9 percent compared to the PW545A.
The PW545B also offers a 2 percent increase in maximum
climb/cruise thrust above 37,000 ft. The twin-spool turbofan jet
propulsion engine, with a full-length annular fan discharge duct,
features a single channel Electronic Engine Control (EEC) to
reduce pilot workload and a hydromechanical fuel control for
redundancy.
Additional features include an Integrally Bladed Rotor (IBR) fan,
dual channel "Burst Mode" ignition system, and integral oil tank
with an external sight glass. The PW545B will enter service with
a TBO of 5,000 hours and an HSI of 2,500 hours.
The development program for the PW545B engine was launched in
mid-2002 and it achieved its first flight on P&WC's Boeing flying
test bed in January 2003. Transport Canada engine certification
is on schedule for December 2003, with certification by the U.S.
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) expected to follow in
January 2004.
The enhanced Cessna Citation XLS is scheduled to enter into
service in the second half of 2004.
P&WC's PW500 turbofan engine family has accumulated over 1
million operating hours since entering into service in early
1997. Two other members of the family, the PW530A and PW535A,
power the Cessna Citation Bravo and Cessna Citation Ultra Encore
business jets respectively. More than 700 PW545A engines have
been delivered to date for the Cessna Citation Encore, with an
estimated fleet time of more than half-a-million hours.
The PW500 series, like all P&WC engines, is backed by the
company's total customer support program. P&WC's worldwide
services, developed over the years in support of its fleet of
more than 37,000 turbine engines in operation in some 190
countries, include a global network of field support
representatives, factory-based technical support, a 24-hour help
line for spares and logistics, dedicated customer training
centres, and factory-owned and authorized independent service
facilities.
P&WC, based in Longueuil, Quebec, is a world leader in aviation
engines powering business, general aviation and regional
aircraft, and helicopters. The company also offers advanced
engines for industrial applications. P&WC's operations and
service network span the globe. P&WC is a subsidiary of United
Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX), a high-technology company
based in Hartford, Connecticut.
