Pratt & Whitney Canada Successfully Completes First Run
of PW625F Demonstrator Engine
LONGUEUIL, QUEBEC--Pratt & Whitney Canada Corp. (P&WC) is pleased
to announce the successful first run of a complete PW625F engine
demonstrator, a key milestone in its program to develop a new
family of engines for the general aviation and small business
aircraft markets.
The PW625F light-jet propulsion system achieved its full takeoff
power of 2,500 pounds of thrust after only five hours during the
test run, which took place October 31. The engine demonstrated
operating characteristics much better than anticipated. A first
run of the high pressure compressor (HPC) gas generator was also
successfully achieved, providing valuable insight into the HPC
characteristics.
"These milestones, which were reached on schedule, mark an
excellent start to the PW625F engine characterization and
development program," stated John Wright, Vice President -
Marketing, Business Aviation and Military Engines, P&WC. "They
clear the way for the first flight of the new engine on P&WC's
Boeing 720 in the first quarter of 2002."
P&WC formally launched a full-scale technology demonstrator for
the PW600 family of general aviation turbofan engines on August 1,
2000. In June 2001, it announced a developmental agreement with
Raytheon Aircraft for the PW625F, a member of the proposed family
of engines.
In addition to providing the legendary reliability and durability
of P&WC engines, the PW600 family is targeted to provide operators
with optimum value and performance while significantly reducing
ownership costs. Production deliveries of the PW600F turbofan
engine could be available within 36 months from a formal program
launch.
P&WC, based in Longueuil, Quebec, is a world leader in aviation
engines powering business and regional aircraft and helicopters.
The company also offers advanced engines for industrial
applications. P&WC's operations and service network span the
globe. P&WC is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation
(NYSE: UTX), a high-technology company based in Hartford,
Connecticut.
