Pratt & Whitney Canada Launches a Full Scale PW600F
Turbofan Engine Demonstrator for the General Aviation
Market

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA--NBAA 2000, Pratt & Whitney Canada Corp.
(P&WC) launched on August 1, 2000 a full-scale technology
demonstrator of its new General Aviation Turbofan Engine, the
PW600F. The PW600 is specifically designed for the general
aviation and small business aircraft markets. This new engine
family is targeted to provide the operator optimum values and
performance, while significantly reducing the ownership cost. In
addition to providing the legendary reliability and durability of
P&WC engines, this engine family also embodies extensive market
research and value analysis.

Aerodynamic designs, component and manufacturing technologies, and
system integration are continuously demonstrated and analysed at
P&WC, not only to quantify the performance but also to assess
their contribution to the cost objectives. Independent rig
testing on critical PW600 components has already been completed
with results better than predicted.

The PW600F technology demonstrator will provide critical insight
into the engine's technical viability by demonstrating its full
engine performance and operability and the integration of advanced
concepts in a controlled environment. It also will demonstrate a
cost-effective, simpler electronic control system. A 2,000- to
2,500-pound-thrust PW600F demonstrator will run in the fourth
quarter of 2001, with the first flight on a flying test bed six
months later. The core technology of the demonstrator engine is
scaleable across the entire PW600 turbofan and turboprop family.
A PW600F turbofan in the 1,000- to 2500-pound-thrust range and a
PW600P turboprop in the 500- to 2000-SHP range could be available
within 36 months from a formal program launch. This engine
demonstrator, which is independent of any aircraft program launch,
will allow P&WC to shorten the development cycle following the
formal program launch.

"We intend to make the PW600 a game-changer in the general
aviation market in years to come," says P&WC's President and Chief
Executive Officer Gilles P. Ouimet.

P&WC, based in Longueuil, Quebec, is a world leader in aviation
engines powering business and regional aircraft and helicopters.
The company also offers advanced engines for industrial
applications. P&WC's operations and service network span the
globe. In 1999, sales were in excess of Cdn.$2 billion. P&WC is
a subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation, a high-technology
company based in Hartford, Connecticut.
