New Technologies

What are we doing about the 44,000 Pratt & Whitney Canada engines already in the field? Well, we inject our new-generation technologies into derivatives as well as our legacy products.

Green Today – Greener Tomorrow

For example, Pratt & Whitney Canada’s improved designs are made available to the field. These designs incorporate best practices to reduce materials of concern as a matter of course. Let’s take an even closer look… cad plated bolts were replaced by non-cad plated bolts on the Pratt & Whitney Canada production line. This is just a small example that shows we are committed to a greener and more environmentally friendly future.

Fuel Efficiency

With respect to fuel efficiency, Pratt & Whitney Canada has been conducting technology demonstration programs to develop and test new component technology and materials. This aims to address the ever-rising customer demand for engines to be significantly lighter, offer improved fuel consumption and be available at reduced costs.

Pratt & Whitney Canada’s PW210 engine family, designed for the helicopter market, is a great example. Launched to bridge a gap in the market, it’s the best engine family today for the singles and intermediate-to-medium twin helicopter segment. It has the highest power-to-weight ratio and lowest fuel burn in its class. Pratt & Whitney Canada is investing to continue leading in this market.

In a nutshell, Pratt & Whitney Canada is developing and will continue to develop new technologies for ALL our markets.

The Future of Biofuels

Pratt & Whitney Canada is fully committed to bringing engines to market that are designed, produced and operated while minimizing environmental impacts throughout their life cycle. Pratt & Whitney Canada is very active in biofuel research.

We are investing in collaboration with the Canadian and Indian governments to conduct research on “second generation” biofuels such as ethanol from cellulosic feedstock and biomass-to-liquid fuels to power fuel-flexible aircraft engines. Another example is our work with Virgin Galactic and Virgin Fuels on alternative fuels for its spaceship program.
